The competition involves a qualification phase where teams compete for a position over a period of three years where only thirty-two are to be selected to play in the tournament. The host team qualifies automatically.
Brazil holds the record for most world cup wins of five times being one of the eight national teams that have won the tournament in the twenty times that it has been held. The only team that has played in all the times that the world cup has been held in Brazil. Other winners of the competition most times are Germany, and Italy national teams have won four times each. Winners of the tournament two times each are Uruguay and Argentina while one time winners of the world cup are England, Spain and France.
The world cup is the most widely viewed competition worldwide and attracts a large number of followers in the sports category globally. It is also the most precious trophy as the winner enjoys a huge lump of money.
For a country to host the tournament, a bidding procedure is conducted where countries place their bids and the Federation committee that comprises of twenty-two members vote to determine the host. The 2018 hosting rights winners were Russia and the 21st tournament is set to be held in Russia from June 14th to July 15th. This happens to be the First world cup competition to be held in Eastern Europe ever.
The tournament will involve the thirty two national teams including one automatic host national team and the qualifying thirty one. A total of sixty four matches will be played in different venues that are chosen by FIFA and the final match scheduled to be played in Moscow.
The current holders of the title are Germany and are heavily tasked in the defending it. The host country benefits in many ways during the occurrence of the tournament. Economic growth are some of the benefits as tourism industry is boosted during this period.
